Silk’n SensEpil vs. evoDerma LUMI Hair Removal

Another of the numerous at-home laser hair removal systems that have come onto the market in recent years is the evoDerma LUMI hair removal system.  This is a compact device designed to be used by either men or women to achieve lasting hair removal.

The intent of this post is to help consumers determine the primary differences between the Silk’n SensEpil and the evoDerma LUMI hair removal systems.  This can help ensure that consumers make informed decisions about which hair removal system is best for them.

What is Similar?

The first of many similarities between the two devices is the technology that both devices utilize.  The Silk’n SensEpil hair removal system uses a technology called HPL (Home Pulsed Light) to generate optical-based light pulses to the hair’s root.  This light disables the growth of the hair, and keeps it from growing back.  A very similar technology in the evoDerma LUMI called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), delivers intense light to the hair’s root as well, also disabling its growth.

It is important to note that this technology only works on hairs in the growing phase, and not all hairs are in this phase all the time.  Since the hair goes through multiple hair growth phases, each device much be used on multiple occasions to achieve the best results possible.  With the SensEpil and the LUMI, best results can be reached if hair removal sessions are repeated every two weeks, for about six months.  After this time, each device should only need to be used sparingly, as necessary.

The features of the SensEpil and the LUMI devices are also very similar.  Each device features a treatment wand with a larger treatment area than many of their competition.  These large treatment areas enable users to treat more of his or her body in less time.  Additionally, each device is designed to be plugged in while it is in use.  This eliminates the need to worry about whether or not the charge on the battery will run out before a treatment session has be completed.

Using the Devices

The SensEpil and the LUMI both work very similarly, as well.  Before treating the skin with the SensEpil or the LUMI, users should shave, clean, and completely dry their skin.  They should also be sure to remove any and all makeup, creams, lotions, and other skin care products.  To use either device, the applicator wand is held against the skin, and a pulse of light is emitted.  The wand is then moved to a different part of the skin, and the process is repeated until the desired area is completely treated.

Who Can Use It

The Silk’n SensEpil and the evoDerma LUMI are both safe for the same groups of individuals.  The devices are not intended to be used for everyone, however.  Those with dark skin tones cannot use either device safely, as the optical light energy that is designed to be delivered to the hair, might be delivered to the skin, causing a slight burn. The SensEpil and the LUMI each work best on individuals with fairer skin tones, and darker hair.  The devices will not work to their fullest potential on individuals with white, grey, red, or light blond hair, as these hair colors are not dark enough to attract the pulsed light from the devices.  As a safety feature, both devices feature a skin tone sensor that automatically measures the user’s skin tone.  If the skin is deemed too dark for safe treatment, a pulse will not be transmitted.  This eliminates the need to worry about whether or not the skin is too dark to treat.

Parts of the Body That Can Be Treated

The SensEpil and the LUMI are both designed to eliminate unwanted and unsightly body hair from the majority of the body.  Users of either device can safely treat their arms, legs, feet, underarms, chest, and back.  Neither device is designed to be used safely on the face or neck, as this risks serious eye damage.

Side Effects

Since the technology utilized by both devices is very similar, he side effects of using either device are similar as well.  When used properly, the side effects of the SensEpil and the LUMI are minimal.  The side effect that many users notice is a slight redness on the part of the skin that was treated.  This usually subsides after a few minutes with either device.  With both devices, users will not experience any cuts, nicks, or ingrown hairs that can occur with other methods of hair removal.

What is Different?

The cost of the devices and their respective accessories is what varies most between the Silk’n SensEpil and the evoDerma LUMI.  The evoDerma LUMI is sold for $399.  On the other hand, the Silk’n SensEpil typically sells for $499.  However, when purchased from this site, its price is automatically reduced by $100, making it only $399, and 20% off its retail price.

Additional costs of the two devices vary, as well.  Each device uses lamps or bulbs that need to be replaced periodically.  The replacement light cartridges (the component that delivers the light pulse) for the Silk’n SensEpil can be purchased for about $38 each.  One cartridges provides enough pulses to allow users to treat their entire area one time, or a smaller section multiple times.  The replacement lamps for the LUMI sell for about $69 each.

The Silk’n SensEpil and the evoDerma LUMI are very similar to one another.  Each delivers lasting hair removal that can be obtained in a relatively short amount of time, with very few side effects.  Additionally, either device will help users save money on expensive professional treatments, as well as the repetitive purchasing of razors, shaving creams, waxes, and other hair removal products.  With less expensive replacement cartridges, the overall cost of using the SensEpil could end up being much less than using the LUMI.
